Hurricane Ida is expected to make landfall along the Louisiana coast over the weekend, which also marks the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
Ida is expected to bring winds as high as 140 mph (225 km / h) when it disembarks late Sunday.
“It will be a storm that will change the lives of those who are unprepared,” National Weather Service meteorologist Benjamin Schott said during a press briefing Friday with Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
Several voluntary and mandatory evacuations have been issued for coastal communities in Louisiana. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said on Friday night the storm had intensified so quickly that it was no longer possible to issue an evacuation for the entire city, as such a move would require transforming all lanes of certain highways in evacuation routes.

“The weather is not on our side,” Cantrell said. “Our time to set up even the SUL, we don’t have time to do it.
