The Denver Art Student League began in 1987 offering programs to help artists of all skill levels, and the Summer Art Market is the group’s most popular event.

This week-end Summer art market at Wash Park West features nearly 200 Colorado performers, local food, kids’ activities, and demonstrations by faculty members.

Kim Harrel is a silversmith and jewelry designer who has been part of the Art Students League since 2014. She mainly works with silver. “It’s such a beautiful material and Colorado has a rich history of silver mining. Obviously, that’s part of the reason we exist,” Harrell said. “I work with other metals. Money for me is my favorite. So yes you can see [it] in all its glory. »

Harrell said the annual event is different from many other art fairs: “A lot of people, it’s the only market they do. And it’s very personal. We are all artists from Colorado.

General Manager of the Art Students League Rachel Basye sees the market as an opportunity to meet Colorado artists in their element.

“It’s an opportunity for them to show and sell their art. And so everyone who comes to interact with these artists, learns what their art means to them,” Basye said. “It’s just a great way to spend a weekend and meet interesting people.”

Basye said the neighborhood embraces the event and provides a special backdrop. Harrell said that was part of the secret to his success.

“It’s just a great atmosphere. It almost looks like a small village festival. I mean, it doesn’t feel like you’re in an urban environment, and even though it’s only a few blocks away, it’s just a big, laid-back fairground,” Harrell said. “It doesn’t seem commercial in any way. It’s just super real and down to earth. And I think that’s why it lasted so long.

The Art Students League of Denver Summer Art Market is held August 27-28, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the streets around the Art Students League building at 200 Grant St.
