Many businesses, museums are back to normal

THE SHOALS, Alabama (WAFF) – This is the 60th year of the iconic Miracle Worker play in Ivy Green, also known as the Home of Helen Keller.

For the most part, 2021 is a year of return after all of 2020’s setbacks.

“Our capacity is actually 600 and we had to reduce it to 275 (last year), so this year we are very happy to know that we can invite the 600 per performance,” said the director. executive Sue Pilkilton.

The Miracle Worker has been a play performed at Ivy Green every summer for the past 60 years. Due to COVID-19, seating and performance dates have been halved in 2020.

This year is back to normal with a full month of shows and full capacity.

Pilkilton said the change was essential.

“We are not funded by the state or the federal government, so we have to rely on people to walk through our doors,” Pilkilton said. “Being able to look for the 600 against the 275 is going to be a big boost to our budget.”

Ivy Green isn’t the only western Alabama tourist attraction set for a comeback, however.

Just south of Tuscumbia in Russellville, the historic Roxy Theater opens for the first time since last March.

“We feel relief. We arrived at. We lost a lot of income during that time, ”said Susie Malone.

The theater may have lost income, but there is no loss of spirit.

Donations from the community helped prevent the theater from closing. Now he’s ready to welcome people back with live music.

“It really helps our region, our economy, and certainly gives the Roxy money,” Pilkilton.

Both locations have events starting next weekend.
