Leading coalition of organizations launches united effort to boost vaccine uptake in rural America


WASHINGTON, June 3, 2021 / PRNewswire / – An ambitious and one-of-a-kind effort to increase vaccine uptake among rural Americans against COVID-19 was announced today, which is mobilizing all sectors of small-town America in a coordinated push. Representing one of the largest public vaccine education efforts in rural America, the COVID Collaborative, Health Action Alliance, Ad Council, American Farm Bureau Federation, Center for Rural Strategies, Rural America Chamber of Commerce, National League of Cities, the Daily Yonder, National The Rural Health Association and the Helmsley Charitable Trust are joining forces to deploy the focused education effort.

The initiative comes as the White House, the US Department of Health and Human Services, states and local governments prioritize the next 30 days to meet a national target of 70% of adults receiving at least one dose. vaccine by Independence Day. “Action Month” will be supported by these efforts to reach rural Americans.

While 56% of rural residents report having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, rural America still lags behind the rest of the country in the proportion of eligible residents vaccinated, according to recent data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

A key goal is to support leaders and businesses in rural communities as they engage with their residents in conversations about vaccines. The effort includes the development of a resource library for information on rural immunization, led by the National Rural Health Association, including conversation starter resources and public service announcements developed in partnership with the Ad Council. These new resources will help rural employers, small business owners and public sector employers share vaccine facts and improve access to vaccines for employees and their families.

The resources will be announced today at a National Rural Business Summit on COVID-19 Vaccines, focusing on the unique needs and opportunities in rural areas and small towns to increase immunization rates. The event will feature remarks by the US Secretary of Agriculture Tom vilsack, Dr Bachara Choucair, White House Vaccination Coordinator and Former US Governor and Senator Dirk Kempthorne, co-chair of the COVID Collaborative. The event will be produced by the Health Action Alliance, a joint initiative of the Ad Council, the Business Roundtable, the CDC Foundation, the Beaumont Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in partnership with Meteorite.

A new partnership with Small Business Majority will also be announced to expand awareness and education for small business owners in the rural south and midwest, led by the Health Action Alliance and COVID Collaborative. And, in partnership with The Daily Yonder, the Health Action Alliance will today launch a new reporting partnership to expand field coverage of COVID-19 and vaccines, with the perspectives of rural businesses.

Rural America is not homogenous, and these organizations have the diverse expertise needed to develop and deliver the right messages to rural communities to get things done on immunization rates. The combined efforts are aimed at reaching audiences across the medical and medical community, the faith community, the farming community, and the business community.
