Lapeer Elks donates to two local organizations
LAPEER – The Lapeer Area Elks Lodge is known to transmit good fortune.
The nonprofit recently received a Beacon grant of $ 3,500 from the Elks National Foundation and shared the funds with two local groups in need.
A donation of $ 1,000 was made to the Lapeer Interfaith Community Association (LICA). A partnership of five churches in the Lapeer area (Grace Episcopal, First Presbyterian, Lapeer Church of Christ, St. Paul Lutheran and Trinity United Methodist), LICA has been providing food to those in need for over 24 years.
The LICA Food Pantry provided an average of 80,000 pounds of food per month to Lapeers and surrounding communities. The Food for Families program reaches over 300 families per month, providing approximately 3,000 pounds of food. The Elks’ $ 1,000 donation will be used to build a walk-in pantry facility instead of using their current location in an older church basement.
The remaining $ 2,500 from the Beacon Grant was donated to the Center for the Arts of Greater Lapeer for theater and art programs for youth. This year, CFA’s Art Pantry provided more than 1,700 art kits to parents and grandparents to help children spend time away from the computer screen and participate in an art project.
The Virtual Theater program allows students to participate in theater without having to worry about transportation or pandemic issues.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk supports all members of their community and is proud to help those in need.
