(NewsNation Now) – Gabby Petito, 22, embarked on a cross-country trip with boyfriend Brian Laundrie in July, documenting every turning point in their new van life on their fledgling YouTube channel, where they invited the world to follow.

But more than a week after Laundrie returned from the trip on her own, her family reported her missing and subscribers took the invitation to heart – perusing her posts and unraveling the mystery in real time.

The hashtag #gabbypetito has been viewed over 867 million times on TikTok alone.

Paris Campbell, actress and TikTok user, saw herself in the videos she watched of Petito.

“I’m a new mom,” Campbell told NewsNationNow.com. “I saw an interview with Gabby’s mother crying, begging people to help her bring her daughter home.

“It just resonated with me.”

Haley Toumaian, 24, is a data analyst. But she also uses her account and expertise to search for clues.

“My goal is to share as much as possible because you never know who is going to see the video and who might know something,” she told NewsNationNow.com.

Millions of people have flocked to the various posts – dissecting the threads and the theories. One of Toumaian’s videos scrutinizes the captions of Petito’s Instagram posts. Campbell reported an apparent change in that appeared in the photos themselves in another video.

“I saw myself a lot in what was being reported about Gabby,” Toumaian said. “We’re the same age, we’re both engaged. We’re both YouTubers and live a similar sort of lifestyle.

She said she also knew what it was like to be in a toxic relationship. This empathy became even more applicable after bodycam footage in Utah showed Petito and Laundrie after a recent fight.

After weeks of mystery, a breakdown in the case has arisen. YouTubers Jenn and Kyle Bethune found video of a white pickup truck they took on their camera while on a trip to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on August 27. This van fits the description of the one in which Petito and Laundrie traveled.

The van was by the side of the road. Then they gave the footage to the FBI, who closed the area to the public.

A few days later, on September 19, they found Petito’s body nearby.

For the online community, the search for laundry and justice continues.

In a TikTok video, Miranda Baker claimed she picked up the laundry on her own in the park. She said she called authorities after recognizing him in the TikTok videos after the fact.

The community also relies on its own findings. Former sailor and self-proclaimed audio / video nerd Brent Shavnore said he improved the video of the van and believed he could see the door closing.

“When I zoomed in with 4k video, it was clear to me on a large monitor that this door appeared to be closing,” Shavnore told NewsNationNow.com. “I got chills down my spine, and when I saw this happening I immediately posted it on Twitter to see if anyone else had seen the same.”

Several people on Twitter commented on the video, saying it was “scary” to see someone close the door “suddenly” in the enhanced video.

There has been some debate as to whether the flood of speculation and analysis has been helpful or not, but Michael Alcazar, a 30-year New York Police Department investigator, says it’s “very helpful.”

“There are like bigfoot sightings from Laundrie right now. Everyone is handing in pictures, grainy pictures, ”he told NewsNationNow.com. “And I think that’s a big help. It’s like a lot of investigators are making a canvas for that person of interest.

There is no sign that the community, hungry for answers, will divert its energy anytime soon.

“There’s something really powerful about a big group of people trying to get the same message across and a big group of people focusing on one topic,” Campbell said. “And I think the natural result of that would be some kind of progress.”

“If I can make a difference then it’s worth it,” said Toumaian.

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) – A Wisconsin high school student on Friday won a federal lawsuit she filed against a sheriff who threatened her with jail at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic if she did not remove posts about social media saying she had the virus.

U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig has ruled Amiyah Cohoon’s constitutional right to free speech was violated when a Marquette County Sheriff’s Deputy in March 2020 asked the Oxford teenager to withdraw her posts on Instagram or to be arrested.

“The First Amendment is not a framework for the government to turn on and off,” the judge wrote. “It applies in times of tranquility and in times of conflict.”

The Wisconsin Institute for Liberty and Law has filed a lawsuit against Marquette County Sheriff Joseph Konrath and a patrol sergeant. Luke Berg, the lawyer who filed the case, said that “this ruling highlights that First Amendment rights cannot be enforced in an emergency. More importantly, law enforcement has no not trying to regulate social media posts by local teens. “

Samuel Hall, attorney for the Sheriff and Sheriff’s Department for Marquette County, said at the time the lawsuit was filed that the girl’s messages “caused distress and panic within the school system and that the police acted in good faith at the request of school health officials. effort to avoid an unfounded panic.

Spain is among 19 countries the EU is urging to implement EU digital and media laws as legal action is launched.

The European Commission is taking legal action against 19 member states, including Spain, for failing to implement the benefits of EU digital legislation in the field of audiovisual media and telecommunications.

“These Member States are required to transpose into their national law two new sets of rules without further delay: the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and the European Electronic Communications Code, and to inform the Commission of this transposition. Both directives are crucial for the digital transition of the EU, having been adopted by common accord of the Member States, and were to be transposed by the end of 2020 ”, said the Commission.

The deadline for transposing the European Electronic Communications Code into national law was December 21, 2020. The Commission sent letters of formal notice to 24 Member States on February 4, 2021. Only Bulgaria and Denmark notified full transposition before the end of August, joining Greece, Hungary and Finland which had already transposed before.

Industry body Independent Media Agencies of Australia (IMAA) has launched its own multi-channel advertising campaign to promote the benefits of independent media agencies.

The campaign will air on radio, television, billboard, digital and print channels, with media contributing more than $ 2 million in advertising support.

Independent media agency BCM created the elements of the campaign, with managing director Phil McDonald saying: “Independent media agencies are not only united by the fact that we are Australian owned and have an entrepreneurial spirit.

“We all have an agile mindset towards the media; we have close relationships with the country’s largest media owners, and we solve all of our clients’ biggest problems by always bringing older people to the table.

“This campaign seeks to sum that up and asks potential clients to make sure they have an independent media option on the list when looking for a new media agency.”

Visual assets feature elements of the association logo transformed to represent the letter A, as independent agencies “always bring their A team to the table”, a finger because “it’s always the pulse”, a graphic because that they “want results as much as you do” and two hands to show that the only agenda of an IMAA agency is “the meeting”.

IMAA Managing Director Sam Buchanan: “The IMAA is a group of advertising professionals, formed by Australia’s most respected independent media agencies.

“This campaign aims to promote the consolidated expertise and leadership that our members can offer, and to put indies at the forefront for companies looking to work with an elite group of advertising specialists.”

The campaign will run for eight weeks nationwide.

Participating media: Foxtel Media, oOh !, News Corp, ACM, Verizon, EMX, Kargo, Gumtree, BlisMedia Australia, Amobee, ARN, JCDecaux, Shopper Media, Moove Media, Quantcast, SCA, QMS, Nova, Weatherzone, the Seven Network , Facebook, Criteo, Nine, Spotify, LinkedIn and Channel Ten.

Dubai: UAE’s rapid growth and achievements in the space sector will be showcased through the arts and other creative media with the launch today of the Emirates Space Art (ESAP) program by Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC).

According to the MBRSC: “ESAP will serve as a platform to bring together a broad layer of the creative community in the National Space Program to present the UAE’s space exploration journey in a new light through works of art and other creative media. This will further strengthen community and youth engagement and connection with UAE space travel and also make a significant contribution to UAE history and world art. “

Salem AlMarri, Deputy Director General of MBRSC, said: “With the UAE’s rapid growth and achievements in the space sector, now is the time to explore artistic representations of our journey through a range of artistic styles, media and techniques. This will not only allow us to reach a wider global audience, but also to speak in a universally recognized and accepted language.

“Through the works of artists, we will be able to witness varied interpretations of our nation’s growing achievements in space. These works of art can be used to tell a story that will have great value for future generations and will also significantly contribute to the enrichment of Emirati art, ”he added.

The MBRSC has signed a strategic partnership with Jsoor, a local private social enterprise dedicated to culture and the creative industry, to implement the program. The partnership covers the development and customization of the program as well as its supervision.

Omar Al Shunnar, Founder of Jsoor, said, “We are very honored and delighted to work with the MBRSC on this one-of-a-kind innovative program which aims to celebrate the nation’s achievements through culture and creative industries. We will continually engage key public and private stakeholders within the local cultural and creative industries community to ensure the program is comprehensive and inclusive in delivering its mandate.

RICHMOND, Virginia – Police are investigating a social media threat against Huguenot High School in Richmond on Monday afternoon. The threat came just hours after a shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News injured two teenagers.

Richmond Public Schools said they had been made aware of an Instagram post referring to the school shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News, and suggested another one could occur in Richmond schools on Tuesday – in particular to Huguenot.

The district said it immediately worked with Richmond Police to increase their presence around the school.

A Richmond Police spokesperson said while their team could not find anything that would lead them to believe the threat is credible, they are working with Homeland Security to continue the investigation.

Some parents announced that they decided to keep their students at home on Tuesday because they were concerned about the potential for a school shooting.

Meanwhile, CBS 6 spoke with Richmond School Board member Jonathan Young, who said there were protocols in place to ensure students do not bring weapons into the building.

“If you’ve got a kid in school and you’re learning some news, at the very least it gives you a real break, especially with all the circumstances, including yesterday to Newport News,” Young explained. “We know that there are a lot of bad actors who intend to do harm, and it is our first and foremost responsibility, before we even read and write and calculate, to protect our students.”

Young said the district has no tolerance for students who post serious threats like this on social media. He encourages parents to report anything alarming or suspicious.

A new axis of media coverage: are there double standards for Covid protocols? http://ruthdiltsdesign.com/a-new-axis-of-media-coverage-are-there-double-standards-for-covid-protocols/ http://ruthdiltsdesign.com/a-new-axis-of-media-coverage-are-there-double-standards-for-covid-protocols/#respond Tue, 21 Sep 2021 03:36:00 +0000 http://ruthdiltsdesign.com/a-new-axis-of-media-coverage-are-there-double-standards-for-covid-protocols/ Monday was a day full of pandemic dissonance. Monday was a day full of pandemic dissonance. Tuesday will probably be too.

That same day we learned of a big leap forward for public health – Pfizer saying its Covid-19 vaccine is safe for children – we also heard of a horrific marker of death. “Despite all the scientific and medical advances of the past 103 years,” wrote CNN’s Holly Yan, this pandemic “has now killed more Americans than the influenza pandemic of 1918.”

Other news outlets ran similar stories when the Johns Hopkins scorecard broke the 675,000 dead mark. Some sites have illustrated the news with historical photos from 1918.

When authorities say the United States averages around 2,000 Covid deaths per day, while the same sources say fully vaccinated Americans are well protected from serious illness, we find ourselves in a state of pandemic dissonance every day. . It’s a special kind of tension that exists when images of crowded stadiums appear in social media feeds alongside stories of overwhelmed hospitals. I see it on my thread when a breakthrough like the news from Pfizer occurs: People who have been “back to normal” for months can’t believe other people are still taking strict precautions – and vice versa.

This tension is particularly acute when we do not have the appropriate context or data to assess the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Try this: Find your own community’s Covid data dashboard. Try to determine the number of recent hospitalizations and deaths among vaccinated versus unvaccinated adults. I tried this for my neighborhood and failed.

Every now and then, federal and state officials provide snapshots that show that the vast majority of suffering and death occurs among the non-vaxxed – that is, adults who have chosen not to protect themselves. But the data is not available in a consistent and searchable manner. It is at best piecemeal. So it remains for us to assume, guess, do risk assessments without reliable data, and this leads to even more pandemic dissonance …

Follow the rules or change the rules

The double standard behavior of Democratic politicians and loosely defined members of the “elite” is a daily theme of right-wing media coverage. Here’s an example from Monday’s Daily Caller homepage: “Elite people attend galas and awards shows without masks while servants have to cover their faces.”

I understand the whole context of these scenes, but the photos always make me disgusted. It shouldn’t be just a “right-wing media” problem. It’s a question of “everyone with common sense”. CNN’s Brianna Keilar, to her credit, cited an example of hypocrisy on Monday’s “New Day.” She showed the video of the SF London Breed mayor partying, without a mask, with a fully vaccinated crowd. “The mayor of a major American city is not following the sanitary guidelines of his own health department,” Keilar said.

Breed, defending, told reporters “we don’t need the funny police” to “micromanage” mask wearing as long as the population is vaccinated. I agree – but that’s not the city’s position or that of the CDC. These politicians should follow the rules or change the rules. If they don’t have authority, they should put pressure on those who have it. If it’s too complicated, they should push to make it simpler. The restrictions, rules and recommendations in this phase of the pandemic should not be uniform. They should be customized based on specific locale, positivity rate, and tolerance levels. But they are not. As the “rules” have less and less meaning, and they are not applied equally or not at all, they will be followed less and less, if at all …

LA County Says Emmys Did Not Violate Mask Mandate

Oliver Darcy writes: “There has been a lot of talk over the past 24 hours as to whether those who attended the Emmy Awards violated the LA County Mask Mandate, which requires everyone regardless of their vaccination status, to cover your face. Well, the short answer is, no, apparently not. An LA County public health spokesperson told me that “exceptions are made for film, television and music productions” because “additional security changes” are made for such events. The department explained that everyone at the Emmys was considered an artist and “everyone appearing on or in the audience of the Emmy Award Show was fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “And the department added that the Emmys had contacted” in advance to share their safety protocols, “which they said” exceeded basic requirements. ” Read the full statement here… “

The stories of the right

There is, of course, an unbalanced right-wing media that does not care about the context. Take this banner from Tucker Carlson’s Monday show: “CELEBRITIES ARE APPARENTLY EXEMPT FROM ALL RULES.” There’s also this headline on the American Thinker website: “COVID Turned Leftists Into Child Abusers” Due To Mask Warrants For Toddlers. Some of the comments on vaccine mandates have been equally far-fetched.
But there are more compelling arguments made in other corners. I noticed Seth Mandel, editor of the Washington Examiner Tweeter about “watching 4 year olds playing football with masks on”, and I thought, well, that doesn’t make sense. My 4 year old went to soccer class on Saturday and there was no mask in sight. The viral threat is roughly the same in our two cities. So who makes these different decisions and why? It’s easy to see how much social trust has been lost throughout this ordeal. And if we ignore this reality, even more trust will be lost …

Notes and quotes on the vaccine war

– Two children who recently lost their 45-year-old father to Covid-19 spoke out on CNN’s “New Day” and blamed Tucker Carlson for some of the misinformation about vaccines he believed … (Mediaite)
– Carlson’s new rant, which is sure to be absorbed throughout the GOP, concerns the US military’s vaccination policy: “The purpose of compulsory vaccination is to identify sincere Christians in the ranks. , free thinkers, men with high testosterone levels, and anyone else who dislikes Joe Biden and makes them go immediately. It’s a takeover of the US military! “(Twitter)
– Shawn Boburg and Jon Swaine write about Thomas Renz, a “once little-known lawyer” whose rise “shows how vaccine misinformation can fuel fundraising and far-right fame …” (WaPo)
– On a related note, Kiera Butler explains how “a very popular app for churches is now an anti-vaccination hotbed …” (Mother Jones)
– Matt Gertz writes about how far-right Breitbart writer John Nolte “tries to get his readers vaccinated” through a “false and crazy” argument… (MMFA)
– “Anti-vax hypocrite Eric Clapton breaks his own vow, plays a role with a vaccine warrant …” (Rolling Stone)

6 rules …

Katherine J. Wu, Ed Yong and Sarah Zhang’s latest story for The Atlantic is titled “Six Rules That Will Define Our Second Pandemic Winter”. One of the many prominent quotes: “The more concentrated the unvaccinated people, the easier the virus can find its next victim …”

CNN RTO Update

Oliver Darcy writes: “No surprise here. CNN on Monday became the latest company to postpone its full return date to 2022. Network boss Jeff Zucker broke the news to employees in a memo, saying executives were” came to the conclusion that a full return to the office in October does not look good to me. Zucker, who mentioned the rise of the Delta variant in Atlanta, where CNN’s headquarters are located, said the new target date was January 10. But he encouraged employees to start coming to the office now, which many staff have already done. I’ll find… it’s actually pretty awesome, ”Zucker said, adding,“ The transition doesn’t start in January. She’s starting now… “”

>> This article from The Atlantic is an important reminder that “working from home” is not the norm: only 13.4% of Americans “worked from home” in August …

To better examine the ways Americans get information in the digital age, the Pew Research Center interviewed 11,178 American adults from July 26 to August 8, 2021. All of those who responded to the survey are members of the American The Center’s Trends Panel (ATP), a survey panel that is recruited by nationwide random sampling of residential addresses. That way, almost all American adults have a chance at selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the adult American population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education, and other categories. Learn more about the ATP methodology.

In the past, the Pew Research Center has conducted similar research on Americans’ use of social media for news. This survey continues to explore similar topics but in different ways compared to research done before 2020 (see more details here); therefore, some of these measures cannot be directly compared to results prior to 2020. These changes in the wording of the questions reflect the Centre’s efforts to improve the way we measure information consumption.

Here are the questions used for this analysis, along with the answers and its methodology.

This is the latest report from the Pew Research Center’s ongoing survey of the State of News, Information and Journalism in the Digital Age, a research program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

While social media and tech companies are criticized for not doing enough to stem the flow of deceptive information on their platforms, a significant portion of Americans continue to turn to these sites for information. Just under half (48%) of American adults say they receive news from social media “often” or “sometimes,” down 5 percentage points from 2020, according to a Pew Research Center survey from July 26 to August. 8, 2021.

Almost a third of Americans receive regular news on Facebook

When it comes to where Americans routinely get information on social media, Facebook overtakes all other social media sites.

In a separate question asking users of 10 social media sites if they regularly receive news there, about one-third of American adults (31%) report receiving regular news on Facebook, while about one in five Americans (22 %) says regularly receive news on YouTube. Twitter and Instagram are regular news sources for 13% and 11% of Americans, respectively.

Other social media sites are less likely to be regular news sources. Less than one in ten Americans say they regularly receive news from Reddit (7%), TikTok (6%), LinkedIn (4%), Snapchat (4%), WhatsApp (3%) and Twitch (1%).

The percentage of Americans who regularly receive news from these sites has remained largely unchanged since 2020, although the share who regularly receive news on Facebook has declined slightly (36% in 2020 compared to 31% in 2021).

A large part of Twitter users receive regular news there

When looking at the proportion of users of each social media site who regularly receive news there, some sites stand out as being more “news” even though their total audience is relatively small. Twitter, for example, is used by 23% of American adults, but more than half of those users (55%) regularly receive information from the site. On the other hand, YouTube, although widely used, sees a smaller portion of its users regularly turning to the site for news (30%).

Overall, the percentage of users of each site who regularly receive information there has remained relatively stable since 2020, a year that included both a presidential election and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Facebook and TikTok are reversing this trend. The share of Facebook users who report regularly updating the site has declined by 7 points since 2020, from 54% to 47% in 2021. TikTok, on the other hand, has seen a slight increase in the share of users who say that they regularly news on the site, going from 22% to 29% over this period.

In some cases, there are drastic demographic differences between the people who turn to every social media site for information. For example, white adults make up the majority of regular Facebook and Reddit news consumers (60% and 54%, respectively), but just under four in ten (36%) Instagram news consumers are white. Black and Hispanic adults each make up a significant portion of regular Instagram news consumers (20% and 33%, respectively). People who regularly receive news on Facebook are more likely to be women than men (64% vs. 35%), while two-thirds of regular Reddit news consumers are men. The majority of regular LinkedIn news consumers (57%) have a college degree of four years or more. Young adults, aged 18 to 29, are much more likely to receive regular news on Snapchat and TikTok than other age groups.

The majority of regular news consumers at many sites are Democrats or Skinny Democrats. This may be related to the relatively young age profile of the news consumer base of these social media sites. None of the social media sites included here have regular news consumers who are more likely to be Republicans or skinny Republicans.
